A note from General Manager, Fabian Westerwelle:
Welcome to CitrusTV, and thanks for visiting our site!
It is an exciting time for CitrusTV and the television industry in general. We're at a crossroads, with the sun setting on traditional analog television, and HDTV, video-on-demand, and podcasting on the horizon.
As the nation's oldest and largest entirely student-run television station, CitrusTV traces its history back to HillTV in 2004, UUTV in 1977, and Synapse before that in 1970. Throughout its nearly 40-year history, CitrusTV has remained on the cutting edge of television technology. When UUTV's closed circuit cables were pulled from the dorms to wire the campus for the Internet, the station quickly transitioned to streaming over the Internet.
Today, CitrusTV continues to innovate. With the emerging prevalence of portable video devices such as video iPods and the convergence of televisions and computers, CitrusTV is now making its content available via video podcasts-in addition to still being available through traditional cablecasts on the Orange Television Network and Time Warner Sports Channel 26.
We are also developing a Commercial Productions Unit that will produce commercials and events for local businesses and organizations-at a cost substantially less than traditional production houses. At the same time, we are also working on a short film production program that will involve the broader community through a campus-wide script contest during the Fall 2006 semester.
Meanwhile, we continue to improve our internal processes, program quality, and facilities/equipment.
Please keep checking back with us!
Enjoy,
Fabian Westerwelle
General Manager
CitrusTV
Who are we?
CitrusTV is the nation's oldest and largest entirely student-run television station. With more than 200 active student members, we are also one of the largest student organizations at Syracuse University. Our target audience is undergraduate and graduate students at SU and SUNY-ESF.
What do we do?
Students join CitrusTV to gain hands-on experience in all aspects of running a television station. In addition to television production, we also offer our members opportunities in on- and off- air promotions, marketing and sales, web development, engineering, systems administration, alumni relations, and more. We produce a variety of news, sports, and entertainment programming in addition to our emerging Commercial Productions Unit.
How can I get involved?
Great question! We're always looking for motivated and dedicated students to join our family at CitrusTV. All undergraduate and graduate students at SU and SUNY-ESF can join CitrusTV, regardless of your home college or major. At the beginning of each semester, we hold a General Interest Meeting that you can attend to find out more information about CitrusTV.
If you missed the General Interest Meeting, you can still join CitrusTV. Just think about what you're interested in doing, and then contact the appropriate producer or Executive Staff member.
Who manages CitrusTV?
As an entirely student-run TV station-and a registered student organization-CitrusTV is managed by a student Executive Staff. Ultimate control and authority rests with the student Executive Staff, but the station is advised by various individuals and groups.
Professor Michael Schoonmaker acts as the University Advisor. He counsels and advises the Station in the exercise of its responsibilities and assists the Station in establishing long-range goals and in planning and initiating short-term projects. He also assists the Station in assessing its projects and programs, improving leadership skills within the organization, and ensuring its accountability and integrity;
Associate Dean of Students Roy Baker acts as the Organizational Consultant. He assists in planning events and programs, negotiating contracts, creating publicity and marketing campaigns, and procuring equipment. He also advises the Station as to governing policies and procedures of the University and the Student Association.
The Committee on Culture Competence advises the Executive Staff, collectively, and the Entertainment Director, individually, concerning programming content, perspective, and tone both in terms of program development and programming decisions.
The Board of Advisors advises the Executive Staff concerning any and all aspects of operating a television station and running a student organization.
How does CitrusTV get its funding?
As a recognized student organization, CitrusTV is funded by the Student Association through the Student Activity Fee.
How can I watch CitrusTV?
The easiest is right here on the Internet. Another way is Time Warner Sports Channel 26. CitrusTV also supplies a significant amount of content to the Orange Television Network, Channel 2 in on-campus housing. We are constantly working on new ways to distribute our programming, so stay tuned!
Where is CitrusTV located?
CitrusTV is located in the Robert B. Menschel Media Center within Watson Hall. We're on the Waverly Ave. side across from Kimmel Dining and next to FoodWorks.
What is CitrusTV's Mission Statement?
CitrusTV is a recognized student organization that operates a not-for-profit television station that distributes its content via the Internet and other media. The mission of the Station is to produce high-quality entertainment, sports, and news programming for the communities of Syracuse University and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in order to provide an experiential learning opportunity for students to work in a comfortable environment with state-of-the art equipment and to gain valuable training through hands-on experience. The Station is open to all University and SUNY-ESF students and seeks to supply programming aimed at all sectors of the campus community. Because the Station's programming is made available via the Internet, the Station is also conscious of its ability to reach a larger online community.
