Sports programs in top 6 final round of College Emmys

Friday, Feb 19, 2010 at 3:37 pm by admin

Message from the Promotions Director

CitrusTV is in a state of celebration this week, after receiving the notification that two of its sports programs have moved on to the final judging round of the College Emmys.  This nationwide competition, run by the Emmy Foundation, has selected episodes of CitrusTV’s On the Bench and ‘Cuse Countdown as “two of only six shows in the entire nation that are in the final ‘blue ribbon round’” of the sports/newscast category, said the station’s general manager, Ryan Balton.

“Everyone is extremely excited about this special honor,” Balton continued, and they have good reason to be.  Winners of the College Television Awards are presented with as much as $2,000 in prize money, as well as free film stock, educational software, and the opportunity to pitch their show to a development executive.

“The fact that two of our sports shows made it to the final round is something the entire station should be proud of,” said Amy Johnson.  Johnson, along with Scott Grodsky, was the executive producer for one of the advancing shows.  “It says a lot about our station and our department.”  Balton echoed this sentiment, saying, “the honor represents more than just excellence by one producer, show or department. It represents excellence station-wide.”

The Emmy Foundation will announce the winner and the recipient of the College Emmy on February 26, but until then, as Johnson put it, “all of the producers are just really excited…to see how everything turns out.”

CitrusTV is dedicated to serving the Syracuse community every day. We pride ourselves on delivering professional content faster and in more detail than any other student news media organization on campus. SUper Sports – Hockey Style

Sunday, Mar 8, 2009 at 10:11 am by admin

After 3 volleyball and 3 basketball games, the SUper Sports crew took the equipment to the ice for a weekend of hockey on February 20 and 21.

The opponent was St. Anselm, a division III school from New Hampshire. Friday night’s game took place at Tennity Ice Pavilion on the campus at Syracuse. On Saturday we ventured downtown to the Onondaga War Memorial – the home of the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL.

Outside the War Memorial

The War Memorial provided us with the greatest logistical challenge of any site. There wasn’t an elevator to the press box and the space was very tight up in the catwalk. It took a great deal of preparation and extra heavy lifting by our ‘morning crew’ to make sure we were set up and ready to go.

All things considered, it was a great experience to work in a professional building and experience some of the hardships of working in an old arena first hand. It’s probably not something to do again, but at least we can say we tried it once.

Plus, it’s always nice to cover a winning team. The ladies won both games extending their winning streak at the time to 6 games. Not bad for the team’s first ever season!

After a 5 weeks off — including a week for spring break — the SUper Sports crew will be back at it for 2 more games. WLAX on March 27 and April 11 inside the Carrier Dome.

SUper duper sports

Here at CitrusTV, we’ve learned it’s no easy task putting together a play-by-play sports production. (It’s also no easy task over-undering cables for some of us… CAMERA TWO?)

As if the three cameras used in SUper Sports seem overwhelming, take a look at this article from The Atlantic about veteran football director Bob Fishman and the television magic that takes place every football game. About 20 cameras, 40 replay machines and six clones of Wes go into making an average production possible.

That number of cameras more than doubled for last Sunday’s Super Bowl, including the pre-game and halftime shows, when NBC aired the Super Bowl for the first time since 1998.

While we were watching the epic game, filling up on guacamole, laughing at TV’s most expensive commercials, scratching our heads at 3D’s comeback, waiting for the hour-long episode of The Office, and complaining about why NBC had to broadcast the center frame of the 16:9 HD broadcast instead of just letterboxing the game on our 4:3 screens (or was that just me?)  … 14 mobile units, 14 office trailers, nine support trucks, three uplinks, five twin-unit generators, 50 feet of fiber-optic cable, 400 production and engineering personnel and 55 hi-def cameras were at work broadcasting the action from Tampa, according to this “SUper” cool article from Broadcasting & Cable

I just want to know when the Carrier Dome is getting a Cable Cam. Is it wrong to be in love with a piece of camera equipment?

50 Yards to Glory

Sometime during the four years of high school, members of the CitrusTV Sports Department realized that a future as a collegiate or professional athlete was not in the cards. Instead, a career in sports journalism better suited their athletic abilities or lack thereof.

But that doesn’t mean they don’t feel the need for competition every once in a while.

In addition to the unmatched on-air opportunities CitrusTV provides, the experience also teaches everyone important skills to maintain station equipment. This includes the proper method to coil cables.

Eric Forman ’11 hasn’t quite yet mastered that technique, yet he felt compelled to challenge operations manager (and master of the over-under method) Wes Purvis ’10 to a duel.

The challenge — a 50 yard cable used for SUper Sports stretched out over the Carrier Dome turf. The fastest to properly coil the cable would be declared the winner and earn all of the glory.

After the jump, you can view the race through pictures taken by Gordon Brookes ’09. Let’s just say it wasn’t close. Read the rest of this entry »
