CitrusTV Travels – Storrs, CT

Monday, Feb 16, 2009 at 3:25 pm by admin

So if you ever think about complaining about the location of SU ever again, just take a trip to UCONN.

Talk about middle of nowhere.

You think is Marshall Street is bad? UCONN students would die for the opportunity to eat pizza at four different places.

Operations Manager Wes Purvis ’10 and I took a trip to Storrs not for our own enjoyment, but for the purpose of covering the Syracuse men’s basketball team on the road.  Ever since we started this ‘CitrusTV Travels’ segment on the blog, the Orange hasn’t won a game away from the Carrier Dome.

Coincidence? I sure hope so.

The biggest thrill of the trip was that the game was at Gampel Pavilion – an 8.000 seat arena right in the heart of campus (UCONN also plays games at the XL Civic Center). Nothing can compare to 31,000 screaming fans at the Carrier Dome, but if Syracuse ever builds a basketball only facility, I hope it’s like Gampel.

Next up for the Orange is a trip to it’s home away from home – Madison Square Garden vs St. Johns.

CitrusTV Travels – Philadelphia, PA

Remember how I said we should stay away from the women’s basketball team at home? Maybe we should also stay away from the men’s basketball team on the road.

Once again, the sports department followed the team down to a new location – this time to Philadelphia, PA and Wachovia Center. The opponent was Villanova. Luckily SU will get another crack at the Wildcats at home.

Ben Youngmerman ’09 and Doug Whitehorn ’10 watched SU drop another one on the road.

“I’ve been to the arena many times before as a fan,” said Youngerman. “It was a great experience to go this time as part of the media and be able to stand on the court and see a behind the scenes look. I even got to sit on the Flyers zamboni!”

Up next: Syracuse@ UCONN. Myself and Wes Purvis ’10 will be on hand.

CitrusTV Travels – Providence, RI

The game ended with a storming of the court worse than last year’s Georgetown game. But anyway you slice it, the Orange suffered a disappointing loss. In the midst of this BIG EAST gauntlet, Providence was supposed to be the easy one.

Yet, just like the previous two games, Syracuse comes away with the ‘L’.

There to witness it all was Ryan Miller ’09 and David Resnick ’10.
Hardly a large crowd (a bit more than 10,000), but an impressively loud student section kept the Dunkin Donuts Center rockin’ from start to finish.

The basketball team and CitrusTV now get to enjoy at least a little bit of time back in Syracuse;  the next road trip isn’t until February 7th. SU travels south to Villanova — and so will CitrusTV.

CitrusTV Travels – Pittsburgh, PA

The Syracuse men’s basketball team hit the road again after a home date with Notre Dame — and CitrusTV was there to take in the action. Anne McNamara ’11 and Tim Swartz ’09 represented CitrusTV down in the steel city.

While the Carrier Dome is an incredible home court advantage, the Petersen Events Center is no slouch. The facility is only 5 years old and the student section is in the lower bowl and surrounds three sides of the court.

“The atmosphere was incredible. Pitt fans were seated around the entire court and they made their presence known,” said McNamara. Now I understand why the student section is nicknamed the ‘Zoo’.”

Syracuse is back in action on Sunday, home against Louisville. After that, it’s traveling time. The Syracuse men’s basketball team and CitrusTV will head to Providence, Rhode Island for a date with the Friars.
