News, Press Pass make Citrus history with live remote hits

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

CitrusTV’s two live shows have made station history this semester, and it was as easy as a video call on Skype.

CitrusTV News and Orange Press Pass both have had reporters “Skype in” to live shows on the Orange Television Network. Using a laptop with Skype in the absence of a costly and complicated live remote ENG truck, CitrusTV has been able to broadcast reporters from around campus and across the country.

Orange Press Pass, Syracuse’s only live post-game television show after men’s basketball games, brought in reporter Eva Zaccaria ‘10 live from Washington D.C’.’s Verizon Center for a conversation with host Landon Stolar ‘10 after last week’s Georgetown game. Tonight, the show plans to bring in Amy Johnson ‘10 after No. 4 Syracuse takes on Providence on the road.

CitrusTV News, one of the only live campus newscasts in the country that airs three times a week, brought in Lorne Fultonberg ‘13, from the Whitman School of Management when Syracuse alum and Vice President of Retail at Apple, Jerry McDougal spoke there earlier in the semester.

This Friday, while students are camping outside the Carrier Dome for Saturday’s basketball game against No. 7 Villanova, CitrusTV News will have live reports from across the campus. Watch on channel 2 or at orangetv.syr.edu - or stop by in person. It may be no College GameDay, but it’s your station.

Sports programs in top 6 final round of College Emmys

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Message from the Promotions Director

CitrusTV is in a state of celebration this week, after receiving the notification that two of its sports programs have moved on to the final judging round of the College Emmys.  This nationwide competition, run by the Emmy Foundation, has selected episodes of CitrusTV’s On the Bench and ‘Cuse Countdown as “two of only six shows in the entire nation that are in the final ‘blue ribbon round’” of the sports/newscast category, said the station’s general manager, Ryan Balton.

“Everyone is extremely excited about this special honor,” Balton continued, and they have good reason to be.  Winners of the College Television Awards are presented with as much as $2,000 in prize money, as well as free film stock, educational software, and the opportunity to pitch their show to a development executive.

“The fact that two of our sports shows made it to the final round is something the entire station should be proud of,” said Amy Johnson.  Johnson, along with Scott Grodsky, was the executive producer for one of the advancing shows.  “It says a lot about our station and our department.”  Balton echoed this sentiment, saying, “the honor represents more than just excellence by one producer, show or department. It represents excellence station-wide.”

The Emmy Foundation will announce the winner and the recipient of the College Emmy on February 26, but until then, as Johnson put it, “all of the producers are just really excited…to see how everything turns out.”

CitrusTV is dedicated to serving the Syracuse community every day. We pride ourselves on delivering professional content faster and in more detail than any other student news media organization on campus. CitrusTV Awards Banquet 2009

Friday, April 24th, 2009

This year, the CitrusTV Awards Banquet (coordinated by Leah Gebler ‘12, Director of Alumni Relations/Events) was held on April 18, 2009 at the Drumlins Country Club right here in Syracuse!  After a brief cocktail hour with cash bar, the 75+ station members in attendance sat down to a dinner catered by Drumlins.

CitrusTV's Executive Staff. Back Row L-R Bill Sharp '12, Wes Purvis '10, Jaime Sasso '10, Jon Erwin '10, David Resnick '10, Jaclyn Schillinger '11. Front row L-R Sheetal Kotha '10, Spencer Raymond '10, Leah Gebler '12

After all had ate, drunk, and been marry, keynote speaker Dave Ryan ‘89 (CitrusTV Alum and veteran ESPN announcer) began his address to the station.  He touched on the many things that could go wrong on one’s first day at a new station, rambunctiously relating his first day the audience.  Ryan emphasized both networking and high grades as the key to job success out of college.  As an adjunct professor at the Newhouse School, teaching a sports reporting class, Ryan professed his belief in grades over experience, regardless of industry.  A student with a 3.5, he said, would nearly always receive a job offer over a student with a 3.0 and mile-long resume.

At the conclusion of Ryan’s speech, General Manager Jaime Sasso ‘10 took the podium to give a very complementary “Year-In-Review” to the station, highlighting achievements in programming and modernization of technology used to produce different shows.

Following Sasso’s speech, Spencer Raymond ‘10 (News Director and emcee for the night’s awards) initiated the awards ceremony.  A total of 21 awards were given out between four departments: Promotions, News, Sports, and Entertainment.  The final award, presented by Sasso, was the “Lifetime Achievement Award”, which was given to Gordon Brookes ‘09 (a 3-year member of CitrusTV Executive Staff and various station departments).  The station screened a video tribute (see below) to Brookes, in which station members close to the winner reflected on his strengths, talents, and favorite flavor of cookie.  Brookes made a short acceptance speech which concluded the event, and enticed all to continue to contribute as much of their time and energy that they could to CitrusTV.

Station members collected their commemorative “CitrusTV” shotglasses, much to Ryan’s chagrin, and continued to mingle over drinks before heading back to campus.  This year’s Awards Banquet was certainly a success!

Out Like a Lamb: Syracuse Ousted in the Sweet 16

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

MEMPHIS, Tenn. With 8:11 left in the game, Jonny Flynn went up for a dunk. Syracuse fans have seen him make it time and time again. Flynn missed. Eight seconds later, Blake Griffin stuffed the ball in the basket to give Oklahoma a 74-52 lead.

It was that kind of night. Oklahoma (30-5) capitalized on Syracuse’s (28-10) numerous miscues en route to a convincing 84-71 win at the Fed Ex Forum, ending the Orange’s season.

“We just made some mistakes that we don’t usually make,” sophomore forward Rick Jackson said. “And we had to pay for it.”

There were plenty of missteps in the Music City. Three- pointers, which helped propel the Orange to a three seed in the NCAA Tournament, continued to be a problem. SU shot an abysmal 7-24 from behind the arc.

“We had really good looks in the first half when we went 0 for 10 from the three,” Jim Boeheim said. “I think that was — we just got in a big hole we couldn’t get ourselves out of.”

The challenge coming into the game was stopping National Player of the Year frontrunner Blake Griffin. The Orange couldn’t find an answer. Griffin finished with 30 points and 14 rebounds.

“He’s patient. He takes his time in there,” Boeheim said. “He’s obviously a very good rebounder…He’s as good around the basket as anybody that I’ve seen.”

Griffin was not SU’s only problem. Syracuse also had no luck stopping guard Tony Crocker, who had made just one of his last 15 three-point attempts coming into the Sweet 16. He sunk six trifectas and scored 28 points.

“Crocker came out there and had a tremendous shooting night,” sophomore guard Jonny Flynn said. “They deserved to win, and they were the better team tonight.”

Syracuse was able to make things interesting. After falling behind 12-4 in the first half, the Orange went on an 12-6 run to close the gap to 18-17. Oklahoma responded with a 21-9. SU would never get that close again, cutting it only to 14 late in the second half.

Flynn once again provided a bright spot in what could have been his final game with Syracuse. The point guard finished with 22, including 13 in the second half while suffering from a bruised lower back. Flynn would not say much about his future after the game, telling reporters he would need to talk it over with his family first.

“I love my teammates. I’m happy just being a student at Syracuse. That’s all I got to say,” he said.

For an in-depth recap on SU’s season and a look to the future check out On the Bench Friday, April 4 at 4:30 on Time Warner 26. Also be sure to check citrustv.net for the full episode of our post game show, Orange Press Pass, for a recap of the game. It will be posted shortly.
