Great Reporting Leads to Policy Change

When Jerk Magazine was banned from distributing in Graham Dining Hall over two weeks ago, CitrusTV News was first to report the story. We then continued to follow the story as it developed. We’re proud to announce that, due largely in part to our hard-hitting coverage, Syracuse University policy has been changed. Nancy Cantor today announced that a long-standing rule allowing only certain campus publications to be distributed in dining halls has been revoked. Now, all publications can be distributed. CitrusTV News will be sure to bring you the latest information regarding this huge step forward in student rights here on campus.

Also important to note is that The Daily Orange, SU’s independent student newspaper, took over two weeks to report the story. Case in point, CitrusTV News is dedicated to delivering student news faster and in more detail than any other student news media organization on campus. Is The Daily Orange your newspaper? Possibly. Is CitrusTV your station? Absolutely.

Cute … but I don’t think you guys should be ragging on the DO. Last Jerk/Graham dining hall story I saw from y’all was an absolute train wreck.

  2. Gutenberg says:

Maybe it’s because people actually read the DO rather than watch your station (what channel is it on again?) And somehow, the policy got changed right after the DO ran a story on it. For some reason, that makes me think the DO has a bigger influence on campus than you? Yes. So pick on someone your own size – like local programming for Dewitt public schools. And learn AP style – no wonder you’re just on TV.

  3. There are two things interesting about this article. The first, that the policy was not changed until The Daily Orange ran a story. The second, is that Citrus TV censors its reader comments after holding themselves apart as a pariah for campus free speech.

Hail, hail Citrus TV. Their one-minute, one-source packages set them apart as campus trailblazers. Raising yet another generation of mediocre, hack reporters to go out into the world and further terminate a once noble field of journalism.

    Here’s to you, Ryan Balton.

  4. Kurt says:

It’s great that you guys reported this story first, and that the Chancellor decided to change the fake policy. However, this comes across as an undeserved, self-important rant. It looks very unprofessional to publicly put down another organization you consider a rival.

Because the DO dug deeper, their article was able to fully expose the ridiculousness of this the “policy,” which certainly contributed to greater awareness of the issue. And saying this change was due “largely” to your reporting (basically taking credit for it) potentially undermines all the others who were involved in this process, like the magazine staff, and especially Dean Branham. I read that she called Cantor and convinced her to repeal the policy.

I’d recommend investing in some PR people. God help you if this actually was written by your PR people. When you’re proud of something, that’s great. Just try some modesty. Because let’s be real, you’re not that hot.

  5. A few clarifications to the above comments…

1.) This isn’t an “article”; it’s a blog post, and is clearly labeled as a blog post. As such, it isn’t expected to follow AP Style conventions, and it reflects an individual’s opinion – not the opinion of the entire station. This is made clear by the listing of the post’s author and by the text in the footer of every page on our blog.

2.) No one has been censored from commenting on the article. The comments just needed time to be approved on our blog’s backend. CitrusTV is in no way interested in censoring constructive speech. The approval process is just to remove spam or severely harmful and hateful language.

As the posters above know, I’ve done a lot of work for The D.O. too, and seen on the inside the negativity expressed toward CitrusTV and other student media on campus. I’m not saying two wrongs make a right. I’m just wondering how else your staff thinks CitrusTV members would respond to The D.O.’s negativity about Citrus.

In closing, the point here is a positive one: the decision against Jerk Magazine was reversed, and CitrusTV News Live at 6, one of the few live campus newscasts in the county, had a part in getting the ball rolling. In the end, that’s what I’m proud of and what’s important.

  6. Kurt says:

Let’s be clear here, Ryan. I am not from the Daily Orange. I am impartial. My point still stands: you guys look like undeserving, arrogant pricks in this post. Is that really how you want your station to present itself?

You should have a serious talk with your “promotions director” because his post just created lots of negative backlash, and not just from the DO staff. Your message, in the last paragraph, was much more appropriate (and accurate) than what Evan wrote. Tell him to get his head out of his ass.

  7. Kurt says:

I don’t care if there’s a negativity supposedly from the DO staff. You just made it way worse. And this isn’t about one person expressing his opinion on your blog, because he is clearly, as promotions director, is the face of your organization. Try some professionalism.

Lastly, and most importantly, the DO wasn’t dumb enough to publicly post their “negativity” on their web site. And that makes all the difference.

  8. Matt says:

Yah, I’m sure the Jerk staff, their advisor, the dean of Newhouse, other professors, and the D.O had nothing to do with the policy being changed. Instead, I’m sure it was your two-minute newscast. Score one for pomposity.
