Welcome back – a message from the GM

Sunday, Sep 6, 2009 at 11:30 am by admin

Hey Awesome CitrusTV Members!

Welcome back! I hope you all had amazing summers and are now rejuvenated for this semester. There are a couple of things you need to be aware of at the start of the semester.

Re-register for the station
A new semester means you have to re-register. If you are planning on being a member of the station again this semester, take five minutes and fill out the form at www.citrustv.net/register. This will grant you permission to use the equipment and will also give you card access to the station. There is also a short survey that will give us some feedback on the station.

New Entertainment Director
Chris Aubin and a couple other CitrusTV members were chosen to be part of the first group of SU students studying in LA this semester. Audra Coulombe has been appointed to complete his term as the new Entertainment Director.

Juice & Java gets a new home
The morning talk-show has been moved from the Entertainment Department to the News Department.

Fall 2009 General Interest Meeting
This semester’s meeting will be held on Sept. 16th at 8:30pm in Watson Theater. Spread the word!

CitrusTV T-Shirts
Our very stylish t-shirts are still on sale for $15. We have all sizes and you can purchase one from myself, Wes, or Resnick at the station. Support the station by buying one for yourself, your significant other, your family, or anyone who likes to wear t-shirts.

OTN goes HD
The Orange Television Network is the nation’s first student cable TV station broadcasting in HD. CitrusTV gets to be a part of this exciting new venture and some of our shows will be airing in HD.

Social Networking
Become a fan of CitrusTV on Facebook and follow us on Twitter @CitrusTV.

I know I will see all of you at the station soon! My door is always open if you want to chat. If you have any questions about anything in this email or about the start of the new semester, feel free to email or call me.

All the best.
JAIME

Citrus joins OTN to broadcast on nation’s first HD college cable TV station

Thursday, Aug 27, 2009 at 6:40 pm by admin

The Orange Television Network, Syracuse University’s campus cable channel No. 2, will be the first college cable TV station in the country to go high definition (HD) this semester, and CitrusTV will be joining in the hi-def revolution.

“I’m looking forward to an exciting year here at OTN,” said Andy Robinson, general manager of OTN, in a recent email. “You will be the first group of students to work at the first college cable TV station in the country to go high-def!”

CitrusTV shows Float Your Boat and Juice & Java are likely to become Citrus’ first HD programs, using new Sony V1U and Z7U cameras. (Excluding, of course, the Web-only spoof on The Office I edited last year.)

The difference: From standard definition 4:3 at 480 lines to high definition 16:9 at 720 lines.

The difference: From standard definition 4:3 at 480 lines to high definition 16:9 at 720 lines.

Channel 2 will still carry the analog signal. But starting sometime in the next couple of weeks, students with HD tuners can run the autoscan feature on their TVs to get channel 2.1 – in 720p HD – and channel 2.2, which will feature announcements and take the place of channel 99.

HD content will also be streamed on CitrusTV.net and on OTN’s Web site.

And welcome back, by the way. Stay tuned for info about our general interest meeting, and if you’d like to stop by the station or if you’re a freshmen who’d like a tour, send me an email at rsbalton@citrustv.net.

CitrusTV Awards Banquet 2009

Friday, Apr 24, 2009 at 6:36 pm by admin

This year, the CitrusTV Awards Banquet (coordinated by Leah Gebler ’12, Director of Alumni Relations/Events) was held on April 18, 2009 at the Drumlins Country Club right here in Syracuse!  After a brief cocktail hour with cash bar, the 75+ station members in attendance sat down to a dinner catered by Drumlins.

After all had ate, drunk, and been marry, keynote speaker Dave Ryan ’89 (CitrusTV Alum and veteran ESPN announcer) began his address to the station.  He touched on the many things that could go wrong on one’s first day at a new station, rambunctiously relating his first day the audience.  Ryan emphasized both networking and high grades as the key to job success out of college.  As an adjunct professor at the Newhouse School, teaching a sports reporting class, Ryan professed his belief in grades over experience, regardless of industry.  A student with a 3.5, he said, would nearly always receive a job offer over a student with a 3.0 and mile-long resume.

At the conclusion of Ryan’s speech, General Manager Jaime Sasso ’10 took the podium to give a very complementary “Year-In-Review” to the station, highlighting achievements in programming and modernization of technology used to produce different shows.

Following Sasso’s speech, Spencer Raymond ’10 (News Director and emcee for the night’s awards) initiated the awards ceremony.  A total of 21 awards were given out between four departments: Promotions, News, Sports, and Entertainment.  The final award, presented by Sasso, was the “Lifetime Achievement Award”, which was given to Gordon Brookes ’09 (a 3-year member of CitrusTV Executive Staff and various station departments).  The station screened a video tribute (see below) to Brookes, in which station members close to the winner reflected on his strengths, talents, and favorite flavor of cookie.  Brookes made a short acceptance speech which concluded the event, and enticed all to continue to contribute as much of their time and energy that they could to CitrusTV.

Station members collected their commemorative “CitrusTV” shotglasses, much to Ryan’s chagrin, and continued to mingle over drinks before heading back to campus.  This year’s Awards Banquet was certainly a success!
