Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night the Web media department

Friday, Jan 23, 2009 at 12:56 am by admin

One and a half blocks from the site of the Twin Towers, the 14-story high school on Trinity Pl. serves about 650 students.

While everyone returned to the zero degree weather in Syracuse, six students and I headed not to the Orange but to the Big Apple for a semester as public affairs interns at the High for Leadership and Public Service in lower Manhattan.

The seven of us will be team-teaching “Participation in Government” at the public high school that was founded in collaboration with SU’s Maxwell School. Every spring semester, the undergrad policy studies program sends a handful of students to New York City for the hands-on experience and a chance to take a couple courses on education policy at SU’s Manhattan admissions center, the Lubin House.

The Lubin House on 61st Street at 5th Avenue houses an admissions office, alumni center, seminar rooms, an art gallery and rooms for faculty and other SU visitors.

So far, everything has been fantastic and everyone is ecstatic about the internship – and living in New York. After moving in on Saturday, we’ve spent the week getting to know the city – and each other. We’ve toured the high school, had our first urban education policy class with SU’s NYC admissions director Dr. Lonnie Morrison, eaten sushi, met with SU alums, ridden the subway about five thousand times, shopped in Chinatown, persevered through broken toilets and malfunctioning Internet connections (the latter being much worse), laughed at Shrek the Musical, resolved conflicts with SU’s mediation guru Neil Katz, and driven public affairs placement coordinator Michelle Walker completely crazy.

The other SU interns go for a stroll down 5th Avenue. From left are Mehreen Nayani, Julianna Malogolowkin, Zach Lax, Samantha Wiese, Courtney Pew and Sally Irmer.

And I know you must be terribly worried at this point about where I’m fitting into CitrusTV this semester, but they don’t call it the city that never sleeps for nothing. I’m still staying on as Web media director, and I’ll continue working on our Web site (whose new features, including this blog, we pushed live over the break) and videoconferencing in for the weekly executive staff meetings. Plus, I have plans to come and basically live at the station during my breaks in February and April, hopefully getting the chance to photog some bball, work on some shows and accomplish other various tasks around the station.

So I look forward to keeping in touch and working with you all while I’m off the hill. Shoot me an e-mail or give me a call if you ever have any ideas for the Web site or notice any problems. And stay tuned for plenty of new and exciting things in Web media land.

Stay warm.

Welcome to CitrusTV

Yesterday was the CitrusTV Spring General Interest Meeting and we had a great turnout. I want to welcome all of our new members to the station. I think you’ll find that working here is not only a lot of fun General Interest Meetingbut also is a great learning experience. CitrusTV gives students the ability to work in a passionate and creative environment where you can put your own ideas into action with other members and really make the most of your college television experience. I know that joining the station my freshman year has been one of the greatest and most fulfilling experiences here at SU and has prepared me to pursue my television aspirations well into the future.

There is a lot to look forward to this semester. We have two new shows in the entertainment department which are looking for new members. You can also join Open Access, which is a web exclusive show in the entertainment department that allows students to get a lot of hands-on experience coming up with new ideas for short productions and then following it through all stages of production. This semester we hope to build up our promotions and operations department so if you have any interest in public relations, please contact Jaclyn at jeschill@syr.edu. And like we said at the General Interest meeting, the operations department is what holds this whole station together, so if you are interested in learning all the technical aspects of the station or would like to help maintain station facilities, email Wes at wbpurvis@citrustv.net. Of course, we also have our new website, which is going to need some dedicated people to help run it and come up with new ideas to get our content to more viewers on the web. If you have an interest in web media, contact Ryan at rsbalton@citrustv.net.

If you were unable to attend the General Interest meeting or if you have friends who still want to join, it’s not too late! The “Contact Us” page has the email addresses of all the department heads and producers so if you know which department you are interested in, feel free to contact the appropriate people. If you are unsure, I’d be happy to help you brainstorm so we can find the right place for you. Email me at jlsasso@citrustv.net.

Don’t forget to register for CitrusTV by filling out the form at http://www.citrustv.net/register/. I look forward to working with all of you, I think we are in for a great semester.

Big Monday Debut

Monday, Jan 19, 2009 at 8:12 pm by admin

Andress (seated on far right) getting set to call Syracuse vs Pittsburgh at the Petersen Events Center. Andress made his ESPN debut as part of ESPNU's Campus Connection.

Last spring, ESPNU began a partnership with Syracuse University called Campus Connection. A pilot show highlighting Syracuse sports was shot in the CitrusTV studios. It was hosted by CitrusTV’s Steve Wanczyk ’08 and a number of CitrusTV members produced packages that aired in the pilot.

This year, ESPNU took Campus Connection a bit further to encompass broadcasts on its family of networks.  Ben Youngerman ’09 got to work sidelines for a SU football game and Steve Andress ’09 called play-by-play for parts of a SU football game and the entire West Virginia/Miami(Ohio) basketball game.

As part of Campus Connection Week, Andress got another great opportunity. The senior got to a call a 4 minute stretch with color analysts Jay Bilas and Bill Raftery during Syracuse’s contest with Pittsburgh as part of ESPN’s Big Monday. Ironcially, Andress took the temporary place of another Syracuse product Sean McDonough.

“Sean, Jay, Bill and the producer Bo Garrett were great to work with,” said Andress. “There was a moment when I looked around and said ‘Wow! Am I really here?’”

Andress is a four year member of CitrusTV and former associate producer of ‘Cuse Countdown. During his tenure, Countdown won best show at the annual banquet. He also anchored On the Bench, and was both a host and analyst on Cuse Countdown.

Wherever the SU football, men’s basketball and men’s lacrosse team goes, CitrusTV is never too far behind. We are proud to say that for most games, we are the only television station from Syracuse that goes on the road to cover the Orange. Yesterday, was no exception.

The ‘Cuse was down in our nation’s capital to face Georgetown in the Verizon Center. A terrible experience for SU, but not for Wes Purvis and David Resnick of the Sports Department.

“It was awesome,” said Wes in reference to shooting the game from the baseline. “The players and fans were right on top of me. It was amazing to be right in the middle of that incredible atmosphere.”

“The spread was lacking [only pizza was served], but there is nothing like watching a game in a professional arena,” said David.

In addition to the great time at the game, CitrusTV Sports would like to give a special thanks to Kristen Volpe and Jen Sachs, two Georgetown students, for their warm hospitality — not to mention the delicious pancakes they served Thursday morning.

Syracuse’s next away game is on Monday against Pittsburgh at the Petersen Events Center — that means CitrusTV will be on road traveling once again.
